As host to the corporate headquarters of Lockheed Martin (defense), General Dynamics, and Martek Biosciences, the Washington area has become one of the hubs of the new high tech economy. Indeed, there are more high tech jobs in the metropolitan area than anywhere else in the country, and more high tech employees than employees of the federal government. Even with the demise of many dot coms, Washington's high tech economy remains strong. A few examples of possible externships related to the high tech economy are:
  • American Association for the Advancement of Science, Directorate for Science and Policy Programs
  • Center for Strategic and International Studies, Technology and Public Policy
  • Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, Office of Policy Analysis and Development
  • Microsoft Corporation, Government Affairs
