Biotech

The Washington area hosted one of the most remarkable competitions of our time: a race to map the human genome. The race ended in a dead heat when Genomics, Inc. and the National Institutes of Health held a joint press conference at the White House to announce that they had both decoded the mapping. In both the public and private sectors, the region is hopping with research and efforts to apply the results of that research to practical medical tools for diagnosis and treatment. A few examples of possible externships related to the biotechnology sector are:
  • National Cancer Institute, Molecular Pharmacology Branch
  • Center for Advanced Research in BioTechnology
  • University of Maryland, Biotechnology Institute
  • United Therapeutics
  • Biotechnology Division, National Institute of Standards and Technology
  • 20/20 GeneSystems Inc., developing kits to detect proteins in the genome code
