...your best semester yet!
" 'It was my best semester at Cornell!' how many times have I heard that from former students? It always makes me smile."
Carol Hagen, CIW Director of Operations
A semester at Cornell in Washington is just that, a whole semester of bests: living in the heart of our nation’s capital, having a once-in-a-lifetime internship, and taking amazing Cornell classes taught by experts making an impact in their fields. CIW is your opportunity to live in one of the most influential cities in the world and be a part of it.
Living in a Cornell-owned apartment building in the heart of DC makes for a fabulous semester. Dupont Circle is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in DC, and the Cornell Wolpe Center is a great place to live. Many students walk to their internship or take a short subway ride. All classes are held in the Center, making it easy to come home from work, eat dinner, and then go to class. The city is a cultural mecca with fabulous free museums, amazing ethnic restaurants, renowned theaters, the zoo, Eastern Market, Georgetown. And of course, DC is one huge think tank, with public talks offered every day on a wide variety of topics. You will never run out of things to do!
Academically, as part of a Cornell program, all CIW classes and credits count the same as if you were in Ithaca. The elective classes are intentionally kept small --fifteen students at the most-- during the fall and spring semesters, which means you really get to know your faculty and classmates. CIW classes are taught by local experts active in their fields who bring their daily experiences to the classroom. Combining the small class size and the expert faculty with what you are learning in your internship experience can lead to some lively debates in class. CIW faculty often bring in speakers or lead field trips to local sites like the World Bank, the National Gallery of Art, or Senate offices, to name a few.
Cornell in Washington has the best of everything --fabulous classes with experts in their field, an engaging, vibrant city with a small-town feel, and the opportunity for substantive work at the internship of your choice. Come to Cornell in Washington ... and have your best semester yet!
